Bomb, Blow up, bulletproof

We are asked continuously about repairing the 6.0L & 6.4L Powerstroke, and many ask me what it takes to make one of these trucks day-in-and-day-out rock solid dependable. Many owners and mechanics know that the 6.0L & 6.4L powerplants have some weak spots like head gaskets and EGR valves, but they never consider the underlying causes of these failures and the repercussions that it has on other expensive and critical engine components when they fail. Ford Powerstroke Diesels are a well engineered and a rock-solid platform regardless of which truck chassis type this power plant is installed in. The problem for PSD owners is that the Powerstroke platform is unique unto itself and different from other diesel power plants. Then, consider the fact that Ford has made numerous year-over-year changes to the PSD power plant for new model years, which are unique to that model year (AND not compatible with previous years). The end result is that VERY FEW repair shops or even dealers have the technical knowledge, experience or equipment to repair and maintain your truck!

Duramax fuel and trans

The 6.6L Duramax has been in production since 2001 and has proved, normally, to be a relatively reliable and durable platform. But some of the problems we have seen recently, fuel starvation from air in the lines, injector failures, water pump failure that are common around 80,00 miles and overheating. The Duramax PCV design vents the crankcase pressure into the intake. Overtime this creates residue in the intercooler system.  The Allison 1000's limp mode feature is a safeguard against catastrophic transmission failure,  In reality, it's less than ideal for many situations. When the Allison 1000 transmission senses an abnormal amount of slip in the transmission, it enters limp mode. While in limp mode, the transmission will lock in 3rd gear, the torque converter will remain unlocked, and the transmission will not be able to operate in reverse.

Common Cummins Repairs

Cummins engine problems include steel dowel pins loosening and falling into timing gearcases of 5.9-liter 12-valve engines, and engine block cracking in its 1999 to 2002 5.9-liter 24-valve engines. Cummins built the 12-valve engines from 1988 to 1998 for Dodge Ram trucks. Dodge trucks with the problematic 24-valve engines have blocks with the number 53 cast on the front driver side of the engine. Misfiring is another common problem with Cummins 5.9-liter engines.
